If you
are scheduled for an overnight sleep study, take your medication as
usual on the day of your study, eat as you normally would, and avoid
taking a nap or having caffeine after 2 p.m.
What to Bring
- Something comfortable to sleep
in, such as pajamas or sweatpants and a T-shirt. (If you are
scheduled to remain for additional testing the next day, it is
better to bring something that you can wear in the lounge
between naps.)
- A favorite pillow if you wish
(there will be two pillows provided on each bed)
- Something to read in bed
before you go to sleep
- A small fan if you like to
sleep with a fan going
- Personal hygiene items
You should leave valuables such as
jewelry and large sums of cash at home. If you are staying for
daytime testing there is a desk and hook-up if you wish to bring
your laptop computer.
When You Arrive
You will be asked to arrive at least one hour before your normal
bedtime, generally no later than 10 p.m., although special
arrangements can be made for shift-workers or patients who always go
to bed late.
A sleep technician will attach small electrodes to your skin and
scalp, held in place by removable gel and tape. This may take up to
an hour. You will then be able to walk around or relax until
bedtime.
- Kitchen facilities, a lounge
area with television and desk will be available
for your use.
- Shower facilities are
available. Linens are provided.
- Your spouse may visit until
bedtime, or stay overnight on a rollaway bed; arrangements
should be made ahead. Children or pets are not permitted to stay
overnight.
- Smoking is permitted in an
outside area. There are some restrictions if you are here in the
daytime for a nap test.
- Facilities accessible to
persons with disabilities are provided.
During the Sleep Study
When you are ready for bed, the
electrodes are connected to recording equipment. The sleep study is
conducted while you sleep. Information is usually gathered for six
hours. If you wish to sleep later please let your technician know
and he or she will turn the equipment off from outside the room and
allow you to sleep in.
- You will have your own
bedroom.
- Individual room temperature
can be regulated.
- A call button is provided in
each room in the event you require immediate assistance.
After the Sleep Study
The usual wake-up time is 6 a.m. However, the time may vary
according to your bedtime and type of sleep study you are having.
The electrodes are removed in the morning, and you can then go home.
Discharge time is usually around 7 a.m.
If you had been scheduled for a daytime nap test, we will allow you
to sleep in. Upon awakening, you will be fed breakfast (we have
oatmeal, cereal, breakfast sandwiches, juice and decaffeinated
coffee).
We also furnish lunch (purchased from a nearby restaurant) and let
you choose from the menu. You may not have any caffeine during the
day.
Typically when we schedule you for your sleep study we also will set
up a time approximately one week later for you to review the results
of your study with the doctor. If your study shows that you have
severe sleep apnea we may call you to come in sooner for treatment.
